Generation Signalling Device (GSD) requirements for Energy Queensland (Ergon Energy, Energex)
What is a Generation Signalling Device (GSD)?This is a device installed on a solar system which allows the electricity utility (Energy Queensland) to switch off the solar system remotely. A signal is sent to the GSD via the power lines using Audio Frequency Load Control (AFLC). The GSD receives the signal and switches the solar system either OFF or ON depending on the signal received.
What solar systems require a GSD?
Grid connected solar systems with an aggregated capacity of 10kVA and above. For large solar systems with multiple inverters the installer can either install one GSD on each inverter or install a single GSD connected to a Demand Response Controller. There are some exclusions such as inverters that are solely supplied by a battery, and inverters located in an area not serviced by Energy Queensland’s AFLC system. This is usually remote locations and fringe of grid areas.
To find out if the AFLC system is available at the premises you’re installing solar at, click on the links below and enter the National Metering Identifier (NMI) for the premises.
When is a GSD required to be installed on solar systems?
From 6 February 2023.
Where does a GSD needs to be located?
The GSD shall be located in either:
- The main switchboard; or
- The distribution board with the main switch inverter supply.
Does a GSD need to be installed on a replacement inverter?
Yes, unless the inverter is being replaced under warranty.
What does a GSD look like?
Below is an example off what a GSD looks like.Figure 1: What a GSD looks like
How is a GSD installed?
The GSD utilises the existing connection available for the demand response mode function on the inverter – this is via an external port or internal terminal block, depending on the make and model of the inverter. The GSD is typically mounted in the switchboard where it obtains a power supply. The control cable is connected to the inverter.
The GSD power cable connecting to the main switch inverter supply should be no longer than 3m in length and should be mechanically protected. This cable should be installed in a manner that reduces the fire risk or other danger.

Can the GSD control cable be extended and how?
Yes the GSD control cable may be extended as required. To extend the control cable, it must be joined within the switchboard using a suitable Cat5e (or better) extension cable. The method of extension must comply with the requirements of AS/NZ4755.1 and RJ45 pin assignment in this standard must be maintained.
Who installs the GSD?
The GSD is installed by the solar installer when the inverter is being installed.
What does a GSD cost?
Approx $100.
